On Tuesday 17th May, we were honoured to receive a visit from two of the foremost experts in the field of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry.

Professor David Smith FRS, of Keele University’s Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM) and Professor Patrik Spanel are the persons credited with the invention of SIFT-MS.

Professor Smith has been an active researcher in this field for decades and has a passionate belief in the benefits of SIFT-MS as a powerful medical diagnostic tool to detect and measure disease biomarkers in breath. Much of his work has been directed towards realising the potential of the SIFT-MS in this field.

Professor Patrik Spanel, of Keele University, currently works mostly at the Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. Professor Spanel specialises in ion physics and his interests include the further development of SIFT-MS for trace analysis in air and exhaled breath.

David and Patrik have been close collaborators for many years and have published many of the most important and widely cited papers that underpin the technology of SIFT-MS in its current form, as developed at Syft Technologies Ltd.

David and Patrik, kindly, took the time to share some of their most significant work with us and in turn we were proud to show-off both our laboratory and our Voice200Ultra SIFT-MS in operation.

Doug Hastie, Chief Executive Officer of SYFT Technologies was also present, having travelled to the UK to take the opportunity to meet David and Patrik, face-to-face for the first time.

Doug commented:

“We all owe a great deal to David and Patrik for developing SIFT-MS. As more and more people are becoming aware of this revolutionary technique, the enormous significance of this work is finally starting to be appreciated.”
