If you want authentic Scotch, you obviously go to Scotland and this meant there was only one place to host our Distilled Spirits Workshop.

Anatune were hosted by the Scottish Whisky Research Institute (SWRI) in Edinburgh a couple of weeks back, for the first workshop outside of England.  A total of 25 representatives from the distilled spirits industry and other industries took part in 2 one-day workshops which included talks and practical demonstrations of the GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS) and an introduction of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS).

One of our Applications Chemist, Kathy Ridgway, showed how the MPS could be used to automate extractions, solid phase extraction, headspace, dynamic headspace and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE – Twister). Kathy highlighted the advantages of using the setup including sensitive reproducible analysis, reduced use of solvents and having less environmental impact.

She also presented the work Anatune have been doing in collaboration with distilled spirit companies who are trying to understand the Whisky process from grain to bottle and weeding out the counterfeiters worldwide.

At the end of the workshop, the SWRI were gracious enough to show us around their facilities and tell us about the very interesting and high quality research they do for the Whisky industry in Scotland, to ensure produce of the highest standard and importantly, Scottish!!
