Our application laboratory team does some really great work and as a result, demands on our lab grow all the time. Our lab is the heart of Element, so whenever we find talented chemists who want to work for us, we are pleased to take the opportunity to grow the team.

We would like to welcome you to Colin Hastie, who has joined our team of experienced application chemists.

Colin completed his Masters degree in forensic and analytical chemistry at the University of Strathclyde in 2004. As part of this degree, he worked as an industrial placement student for ICI using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy.

He subsequently worked for Unilever in their safety and environmental assurance centre as an analytical chemist. His main focus was on the determination of household and personal care (HPC) ingredients in environmental matrixes to support environmental risk assessment.

During his 14 years at Unilever he developed skills in GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS, LC-ToF/MS as well as sample preparation techniques including SPE, SPME and liquid-liquid extraction.

Whilst working at Unilever he completed a part time PhD in environmental science from Lancaster University. His thesis focused on the identification and application of novel polymeric materials as passive sampling devices, to allow time weighted average free concentration determination of analytes in aqueous samples.

He has co-authored a number of publications on the determination of HPC ingredients in aqueous and sediment samples, as well as presenting his work at international conferences.

Colin has been a long-term customer of Element and has experience of utilising many of the features of the GERSTEL autosamplers.

Out of work Colin enjoys spending time with his family, walking his dog and watching rugby.
