A Friday Afternoon in the Caribbean?

January is a cold dark month, when many of us wish for the sunshine of summer, or dream of a warmer climate. Friends based abroad make us jealous with posts of beaches and sunshine.
I have a friend, Dr Samiramis Sarkardei who works in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) as a Teacher and who happened to be covering Mass Spectrometry with her class at Cedar International School. She asked if I could contribute via a video link to show them a real analytical lab and discuss some real-life examples of how the technique is used. I am always keen to educate people in how analytical chemistry is used in the real world, so the last Friday in January, a little bit of the Caribbean came to our lab in Cambridge.
Using our Life-Size video technology, Samiramis was able to dial in directly to the Anatune lab, so I could show some of the instruments and talk theory and applications with real relevance.
The students seemed generally interested in the technique and in my background as an analytical chemist, and it was a pleasure to be involved very briefly in their chemistry eduction. I hope some of them may even consider a career in this area.
