Dan Carrier, Anatune Applications Manager

Dan Carrier, applications manager

Thanks for taking the time, Dan. Can you tell me how long have you worked at Anatune and what are your current responsibilities?

I started at Anatune in July 2011 as an application chemist and was promoted to Applications Manager in 2013. Today, I manage an applications team consisting of 6 scientists. We develop automated solutions and these can involve complex sample preparation or sample introductions to LC/MS, GC/MS or SIFT-MS instrumentation. I make sure that the analytical methods are developed to be robust and fit for purpose, and I endeavour to make sure that the team have a good, productive working relationship with our customers at all times.

What led you to a career in analytical chemistry?

I started work at Beecham Pharmaceuticals as a 16 year old having liked Chemistry at School. I carried out two part-time chemistry degrees whist working in the pharma industry and my career has continued from there.

What have been the most significant industry changes since the start of your career?

It would have to be the benefits brought about by automation. When I started my career, the GCs we did not have any automation and we had to perform manual injection. The efficiency and accuracy brought about by automated GC instrumentation has been vast.

application notes

25 Years of success is a fantastic feat; what are the attributes that have enabled Anatune to achieve this?

Customer focus. Simple as that. And I’m sure I am not the only one who will say it!

What have been your proudest moments at Anatune so far?

Winning Best Innovative Company at Action Coach Awards twice!

What are your predictions for the future of analytical chemistry/GC,LC,MS over the next 5 – 10 years?

I think the role of Automation will continue to grow and grow as it has done in recent times. And I can also see a huge influence coming from Artificial Intelligence as the capabilities and applications are broadened and filter out to all research environments.

Which three people, dead or alive, would you invite to your fantasy dinner-party? And why?

Axl Rose, Jack Black, and Heinz Wolff would be an interesting combination!

hobby, jogging, jogger

Which hobbies or interests help you to relax when you’re away from the office/laboratory?

Jogging is my favourite hobby. I have three children so don’t have much time for any others!
