Metabolomics usually requires the preparation of extensive sample sets to allow successful differentiation between sample types.  Hence, good analytical data quality is essential to highlight true biological variability.

This is an ideal scenario where automation can make a significant contribution towards the robustness and reproducibility needed to achieve good quality data.

For this reason, last week here at the Anatune applications lab in Cambridge, we carried out a series of two two-day workshops to show end-users how automation can benefit their metabolomics.

Across the two days, the participants had the chance to familiarise themselves with the GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS) and some new accessories for automated sample preparation:

  • The mVORX for vortex agitation
  • The mVAP for vacuum evaporation
  • The Anatune CF200 Centrifuge for phase separation

Furthermore, in collaboration with Agilent Technologies and TL Science Ltd, we introduced three powerful tools for metabolomics studies:

  1. The GERSTEL MPS MultiFlex for automated sample preparation
  2. The high resolution, accurate mass Agilent 7200 GC/Q-TOF
  3. The Agilent Mass Profile Professional software for Chemometrics analysis

To prove the highly synergic combination of these tools, we in the lab demonstrated two fully automated sample preparation procedures for fatty acids analysis.  The automated workflows included sample preparation, derivatisation and GC/Q-TOF MS analysis and they were applied to two biological matrices, freeze-dried herbs and fresh salmon tissue.

The results obtained illustrated the value of automated sample preparation in producing highly consistent results – something that is of real importance in metabolomics studies.

An application note describing the automated methods developed can be found here.

We were very pleased to witness such a good level of engagement from all participants and very constructive and stimulating discussion we’ll treasure to drive future work.
