AS219: Rapid Odour Screening of Paperboard Using Static Headspace-SIFT-MS

Rapid Odour Screening of Paperboard Using Static Headspace-SIFT-MS:

Paperboard contains several volatile organic compounds arising from both the naturally sourced materials and subsequent processing. Some of these compounds impart an odour to products.

The traditional approach to quantifying odour uses a sensory panel, which is expensive and can be subject to problems brought about by fatigue.

Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), however, can selectively detect and quantify a wide range of odour compounds in real time, more cost-effectively.

This preliminary evaluation demonstrates SIFT-MS’s potential to provide odour ratings of paperboard samples. Measurements were coupled with multivariate statistical analysis to reduce the multi-compound dataset to a single parameter, the odour rating.

The combined instrumental and statistical approach facilitated enhanced quality control through fast, economical screening of the widest range of volatiles.

Anatune Application Notes:

Anatune (and our partners) regularly produce Application Notes. These cover a wide and diverse range of methods, techniques, applications, and related chromatography technology. Our Application Notes provide detailed technical information, unique applications insight and method development & validation, as well as systems configuration innovations to ensure readers can further their knowledge in an engaging way. For many years, Anatune’s Application Notes have helped and supported analytical chemists in the fields of Gas Chromatography – GC, Liquid Chromatography – LC, and Mass Spectrometry – MS achieve to develop analytical solutions. Visit our Applications Note page to search for the insight you need in the following categories: Matrix, Technique, Analyte, Instruments, Product, Industry. Or alternatively, CONTACT US for more information or to put forward an Application Note subject and our Applications Team will be happy to support you in any way they can.
