Sensitive SBSE determination of free acids and phenols – along with the usual suspects.

Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) and Headspace Sorptive Extraction (HSSE) have regularly been applied successfully to the analysis of odour-active chemicals in a wide variety of sample matrices at concentrations as low as ultra-trace levels.

The addition of the Ethylene Glycol-Silicone (EG-Silicone) Twister has significantly enhanced the usefulness of these techniques by enabling the efficient extraction of polar hydrogen bond donors like phenols and carboxylic acids.

There is a great article on this in the latest GERSTEL Solutions Worldwide Magazine, which you can read here.

Examples presented in this article include the determination of off odours in Beer, Pretzels, and Casein, a widely used food ingredient. Also, axillary of odours were determined in well-worn T-shirts to determine the odour reducing impact of antibacterial fabrics.
