Dr Hannah Florance is the Metabolomics Specialist and Mass Spectrometrist at the University of Edinburgh.  Hannah has kindly agreed to guest present at our upcoming Life Science’s Workshop, being held on the 19th and 20th June 2018.  Please let us introduce you to her…

Hannah has always had a penchant for being a bit of a jack of all trades, but has always veered towards analytical chemistry, especially if it involved mass spectrometry.

After completing her undergraduate degree at Sheffield Hallam University in 1996 she worked for the biotech company PPL Therapeutics in Edinburgh which produced transgenic proteins in milk, learning techniques such as amino acid analysis and HPLC.

In 2000, she made the move into academia (University of Edinburgh) and again, put herself into the position of being the group’s specialist for HPLC and peptide mass fingerprinting using MALDI-TOF MS. She then moved across to chemistry to undertake her PhD studying protein confirmations in solution and the gas phase.

In 2009, she moved to the University of Exeter to set up their omics core facility equipped with an LC-QTOF, and LC-QQQ for untargeted and targeted analyses and a GC-QTOF. Whilst starting out doing proteomics and metabolomics, she began to specialise in the latter, analysing samples which ranged from bacterial pathogens to plants.

In 2015, she went back to the University of Edinburgh to set up their metabolomics core facility in the Mammalian Centre for Synthetic Biology where she has an LC-IM-QTOF and GC-QTOF with a MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS).

Hannah will present some preliminary data comparing different methods for extracting lipids using manual and automated techniques.
