Membrane Assisted Solvent Extraction (MASE) can be performed in 20ml vials

Membrane Assisted Solvent Extraction (MASE) is a useful extraction technique that can be fully automated using the GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS).

It is fair to say that those analysts that do use automated MASE love it. However, too few people understand how it works and what it has to offer.

In summary, MASE provides:

  • The option to use solvent/solute combinations that would not usually form separate phases
  • Clean particulate-free extracts
  • Is simple, inexpensive and easy to automate

GERSTEL have recently published an article on the topic that shows how it has been used in flavour analysis and gives a useful insight into its use in real life.

Rotundone is a key flavour component that is characteristic of black pepper. It also plays an important part in the flavour of Australian Shiraz. The article shows how MASE is used to efficiently extract Rotundone from samples of red wine.
