Second Guest Speaker Confirmed for our Life Science’s Workshop
Dr Thomas Howard, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. Dr Howard has kindly agreed to guest present at our upcoming Life Science’s Workshop, being held on the 19th and 20th June 2018. Please let us introduce you to him…
Dr Howard trained as a plant biochemist and molecular biologist. He completed his PhD at the University of Sheffield, before working at the University of Essex and the John Innes Centre. During this time, he studied the genetics and biochemistry of carbon metabolism in plants.
In 2011, Dr Howard moved to the University of Exeter where his interest shifted from a reductionist approach to a constructionist one as he began to build synthetic pathways in bacteria for the biosynthesis of petroleum-replica hydrocarbons. This work was shortlisted for a BBSRC Innovator of the Year award in 2013.
In 2015, Dr Howard moved to Newcastle University where he has established his own research group. Their work focusses on developing methods to facilitate biosystems engineering. These methods include a combination of laboratory automation and statistical Design of Experiments (DoE).
Dr Howard will present some of the background to his current work, including:
- The specific challenges of engineering biological systems,
- The advantages of laboratory automation to our work,
- The role that DoE plays in optimising SOPs,
- The role that DoE plays in biosystems engineering,
- How DoE and automation enable each other.

The cost is £100 + VAT per person, which is inclusive of all course material, lunch and refreshments on both days.
