Mass Spectrometry – Let’s all Speak the Same Language

One of the minor frustrations of mass spectrometry is the way that different people often have different interpretations of terms that are in common use.

Even basic terms like mass accuracy and resolution aren’t always interpreted in a uniform fashion, and this can get in the way of sensible discussion.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists (IUPAC) recognised the problem a while ago, and set up a project on the topic. You can find details here:  Standard definitions of terms relating to mass spectrometry

Andrew Golby has just drawn my attention to the fact that IUPAC have now produced a useful publication that sets out extended and updated definitions of important terms relating to MS.
