Phil Kay, PhD, is a Senior Analytics Consultant for JMP, a business unit of SAS. Phil has kindly agreed to guest present at our upcoming Life Science’s Workshop, being held on the 19th and 20th June 2018. Please let us introduce you to him…

Phil is interested in empowering scientists to drive improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of R&D processes through the use of statistical tools, in particular, the application of Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies.

Previously, Phil worked for Fujifilm Imaging Colorants, where he was a key scientist in the development of numerous processes for the manufacture of colorants for digital printing.  Phil began his career as a Development Chemist, later becoming a Data Scientist as his interest in the application of statistical tools grew.

At Fujifilm, he was responsible for helping colleagues across the business to obtain better data and make better use of it through training, coaching and consultation.  A large part of his work was working with analytical chemistry, physical science and quality control departments to help them efficiently develop the most useful and robust characterisation methods.

Phil has a Master’s Degree in Applied Statistics from Lancaster University.  He also has a Master’s and PhD in Chemistry from The University of Edinburgh and is a Royal Society of Chemistry Chartered Chemist.

Phil will give a talk on how you can ‘Learn More with Design of Experiments’. He will discuss why you should use DoE and the risk of using traditional experimental strategies.  He will also give a potted history of the method with visual illustrations of key concepts, before finishing on how modern tools enable more people in more situations to gain the benefits of DoE.

The workshop will take place at the Hotel Felix in Cambridge, and practical demonstrations will be shown from our lab in Girton, along with a lab tour.

The cost of the workshop is £100 + VAT per person, which is inclusive of all course material, refreshments and lunch for both days.
