Applications, Jamie Minaeian, SIFT-MS, staff, Syft Voice200Ultra, team,

I am the latest member to join the applications team here at Element as an Applications Chemist.

Prior to joining Element, I was working towards a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry from the University of York, focussing on adapting an Agilent GC/MS bench-top instrument to operate on a research aircraft.  This work provided experience of adapting GC instruments for particular needs, in addition to knowledge of atmospheric monitoring.  I was also able to gain experience with thermal desorption techniques, for online VOC testing.

My PhD took me to many places around the world, investigating trace atmospheric species from the Arctic, through the tropics and as far south as the Falkland Islands, with the goal of further refining how we understand and predict air quality and climate change.  Additionally, I gained a working knowledge of flow and electronic systems, whilst designing and building instruments and devices to make the GC/MS aircraft-compatible.

More recently, I have spent the last 6 months in New Zealand, working for Syft Technologies in Christchurch.  Through this, I was involved in many areas of the company, including production, analytics and development.  It was here that I gained a knowledge of GERSTEL equipment, using it to adapt the current technology to SIFT-MS.

Whilst at Syft, I was able to gain much knowledge about the inner workings of the Syft Voice200ultra, having carried an instrument through the various production stages from building individual modules and instruments, mass spectrometer tuning and conducting Quality Assessment on finished products.

My background is Chemistry, with a BSc from the University of Sheffield, before gaining an MSc and PhD at the University of York.

I am a huge fan of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry.  It has great capabilities for both real-time analysis and the high-throughput analysis of VOCs.

I look forward to working with you on your applications.
