GA10: Completely Automated Extraction and Determination of Antibiotics in Eggs Using a Robotic Autosampler and LC-MS/MS Platform

Martin Perkins

29th October 2019

Veterinary drugs used to control disease in chickens can migrate to and potentially accumulate in the eggs they lay, which can lead to allergic reactions or antibiotic resistance in humans if consumed. Screening methods for antibiotic residues in eggs are therefore required and can be challenging due to the complexity of the matrix.

This GERSTEL application note describes a high throughput fully automated extraction and analysis procedure using liquid-liquid extraction, pass-through solid phase extraction and analysis by LC-MS/MS.

The sample preparation was achieved with fully automated extraction and analysis using an MPS roboticPRO sampler with GERSTEL Quickmix, CF200 Centrifuge and Universal Filtration Option with analysis using the Agilent Ultivo Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer. The limits of Quantitation for this method were five times lower than industry minimum reporting limits and excellent accuracy (average 102%) and precision (average 3.92%) data were obtained for all antibiotics analysed.
