Analysis of Formaldehyde Scavenging Compound Using Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS):

The chemical Formaldehyde is present in a wide range of products and is a known carcinogen. Levels of Formaldehyde in the environment therefore should be monitored and if possible controlled.

The measurement of Formaldehyde using traditional chromatographic approaches can be challenging and due to its size and polarity, it often requires derivatisation.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of potential scavenger materials, it is useful to be able to monitor concentration changes in real time.

This application note outlines the evaluation of a novel scavenging material by analysis of Formaldehyde in real time using Selected Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Selectivity was assessed by also spiking and monitoring acetaldehyde and acrolein as well as a mixture of non-polar analytes and in the presence of water. The results indicate the selectivity of the scavenger and demonstrate the suitability of SIFT-MS as a measurement technique for this application.
