This edition of Application Note ReView takes a look back at AS224 – Automated Solvent Extraction of Flavours from a Selection of Fruit Beverages.

There are a number of techniques that can be employed for the extraction of flavours from liquid samples. Some of these are time consuming and can involve expensive glassware and large volumes of solvents. The need for robust automated flavour extraction solutions is clear.

Liquid-liquid MicroExtraction (LLME) and Dispersive Liquid-Liquid MicroExtraction (DiLLME) have been used for a number of targeted and automated flavour extraction applications.

In this application note, the use of these approaches for flavour profiling is investigated and compared to a more standard headspace solid phase microextraction approach (HS-SPME).

This work proves the importance in the choice of sample preparation in obtaining the required information about samples.

Automated liquid extraction can be used as an alternative to more established favour profiling techniques and provide selectivity through choice of solvent and sensitivity by use of large volume injection (LVI).
