15 reasons why Ireland needs to know more about SIFT-MS

Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry is a new and fast growing technique – and no-one in Ireland is using it yet!!

Elsewhere, in Europe, the USA and the Far East, analytical chemists from all sectors have bought or are planning to invest in SIFT-MS and here are the reasons why:

  1. SIFT-MS analyses all volatile organic compounds with ease.  Including small polar analytes that are impossible (or at least very difficult) to do any other way.  Formaldehyde and carbonyl compounds are good examples.
  2. As a detector, it is both universal and highly selective.
  3. It is lightning fast; measurements can be made in tens of milliseconds – not tens of minutes.  This means that you can track changes in sample composition in real-time.
  4. It can make measurements without the need for standards.
  5. It can be coupled with automated headspace sampling to zip through large batches of samples many times faster than GC-MS.
  6. Matrix independent headspace measurements (using multiple headspace extraction) are six-times faster than GC-MS.
  7. Method Development is really fast.  Hours not weeks!
  8. It has great sensitivity and a wide dynamic range (for air samples, greater than six orders of magnitude from pptv levels).
  9. Unlike GC-MS, it loves water! It has no problem with high humidity samples ever.
  10. It is the best way to analyse for sulphur compounds – it is linear, sensitive, has a wide dynamic range and doesn’t depend upon unreliable sulphur standards.
  11. How else would you analyse something as tough as H2S in ammonia at 25ppb?
  12. It is transportable and robust – it makes field measurements a breeze.
  13. Not only can it analyse organics, it can handle inorganic gases too – HCI, HF, NO2, N2O, Ozone, SO2 and more besides.
  14. It is easy to use; unskilled operators can (and do) use it.
  15. It is used for environmental air analysis, trace organics in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, biomarkers in breath, flavours, volatile impurities in consumer products, occupational hygiene and much more besides.
