Preliminary Investigation of a Range of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) Applications
Application Note
Selected ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is a real time analyser for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gas phase. Selectivity is achieved by the use of different reagent ions, formed using a microwave discharge. As there is no chromatographic separation analysis its rapid and pre-determined reaction rates enable quantitation without the need for external calibration standards. This application note demonstrates the potential of SIFT-MS by outlining initial work undertaken for a selection of applications – namely NPL30 Component gas mix, Vehicle Interior Air Quality (VIAQ) and Dynamic release of fragrance from fabric. The potential of SIFT-MS is clearly demonstrated in this early study into the technique and could provide access to analytical areas previously inaccessible by other analytical separation science approaches.
