Comparison of the Agilent 5977B MSD with High Efficiency Source and 7250 Q-TOF for Analysis Using Dispersive Liquid-Liquid MicroExtraction of Semi Volatile Organic Compounds

Water testing laboratories have historically had to deal with large sample volumes, leading to high transport costs and issues with storage capacity. Thanks to increases in sensitivity of instrumental platforms, sample sizes can now be easily scaled down while achieving required detection limits. This application note compares performances of the Agilent 5977B GC-MSD and 7250 GC/Q-TOF for the analysis of environmental contaminants using automated Dispersive Liquid-Liquid MicroExtraction (DiLLME). Targeted and untargeted work using Q-TOF data gives higher confidence in results thanks to the accurate mass data, achieving mass accuracy less than 5 ppm, which is generally considered the requirement for identification of unknowns.  In combination with MS/MS and Low Energy Electron Ionisation (LE_EI) capabilities, the Q-TOF is a very powerful tool for structural interrogation and confirmation. Both single quadrupole and Q-TOF instrumentation can be used as part of an automated DiLLME targeted workflow. Automation brings an advantage in reducing sample volumes and sample extraction times to increase laboratory efficiency, with an extraction time of 30 minutes for six samples.
